We were blessed to meet Daniel on a beautiful sunny day, he came out and showed us how talented he can be on his unicycle. We were in awe... Here is a beautifully written piece about Daniel, written by Nichole Montanez on February 7.

Eleven-year-old Daniel Giffin is known for riding a unicycle the last 7 miles up Pikes Peak Highway in August, 2018. His older brother, Levi, had done the whole thing in August, 2017.
The road is normally off-limits to unicyclists. But as part of an organized event for cyclists, in a category created just for him, Daniel completed the ride in 2 hours, 54 minutes, 6 seconds. He had been given 3 hours. Daniel had a huge smile as he recounted the story. “It’s hard to catch Daniel not smiling,” his mom, Torie, said. Today was an exception. He was recovering from brain surgery. Some smiles were still there but he was tired.

Nearly 3 months ago, 3 months after conquering America’s mountain, Daniel has been diagnosed with brain cancer — Grade 3 anaplastic ependymoma, which is a type of malignant ependymoma tumor commonly found in young patients.

Around thanksgiving of last year, Daniel began experiencing nausea and intense pain behind his eyes. He was treated for nausea but the headaches continued. Daniel and his family left Colorado for a trip to Disneyland on December 16. Just 3 days later, he began experiencing numbness in his left foot. The Disney trip was cut short and the family made their way to Phoenix where they were to spend Christmas with extended family. Upon arrival, December 22, 2018, Daniel was taken to Phoenix Children’s hospital where an MRI revealed a mass in his brain — half the size of an adult fist. Daniel says he was taken right from MRI to surgery to remove the tumor — a gross total resection of the right side. He did well and was released from the hospital on Christmas Day.

Back in Colorado a few weeks later, Daniel went in for a follow-up MRI to get clearance to begin radiation. That’s when they discovered 2 new tumors. On Monday of this week he went in for a second brain surgery where they found a third. All three tumors were removed and Daniel is back home recovering. He says he feels so much better. The headaches were so bad and “that would totally mess me up,” he said.

Daniel will begin radiation in two weeks. In the meantime, local race organizers in Colorado Springs, CO are planning a race/fundraiser to help the family with expenses. A more complete story coming soon to The Gazette.

UPDATE: Daniel finished his 6 weeks of radiation (33 treatments total) on Friday April 5th!!!

We want to celebrate Daniels achievements while raising some funds for him and his family!!!
